A rare and impressive antique Staffordshire pottery bull-baiting figure group by Obadiah Sherratt and dating from around 1820. The pottery group stands raised on a rectangular shaped base supported on six legs and portrays a large, tethered bull fending off two attacking dogs. A well-dressed man wearing a jacket, waistcoat and hat stands next to rear of the bull holding his hands in the air. The figure is hand painted in colored enamels and has titled panels to the base reading BULL BEATING and NOW CAPTAIN LAD. The figure is typically otherwise unmarked. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market. In good overall condition with a few well executed elements professionally restored and with some natural stress hairlines under the base.
