Taking Sekah (2008)

$72

Great Big Canvas

'Sekah is a symbolic tool to represent the spirit of ancestors in a ritual of purification called Nyekah for Hindu people in Bali,' says artist Made Surita. 'Sekah might be presented in a form of effigies, which inside the soul of the spirit must be purified in order to receive protection from God. The descendants bringing Sekah cradle them like babies in their arms, while another family member holds an umbrella as a symbol of honor and service for the ancestor's spirit.'
