19th Century British Mahogany Edwardian Hand-Carved Armchair

Chairish

$898

Graceful proportions and refined craftsmanship make this 19th century British armchair a wonderful example of Victorian design influenced by earlier Gothic traditions. Crafted in richly figured mahogany, the chair is distinguished by its hand carved pierced back splat, decorated with three circular foliate medallions framed by scrolling vine motifs. The carving provides both visual interest and a sense of lightness that complements the chair’s elegant silhouette. Scrolled arms flow naturally into finely turned and fluted front supports, while the tapered rear legs and H form stretchers provide strength and balance. The chair retains its original hand woven cane seat, an authentic period feature that enhances both comfort and historical character. Over the years, the mahogany has developed a warm, mellow patina that highlights the quality of the wood and the careful hand finishing. Versatile in scale, this antique armchair works beautifully as a desk chair, library chair, hall chair, or occasional accent in a thoughtfully designed interior. Its restrained ornament and exceptional craftsmanship allow it to blend effortlessly with traditional English, Gothic Revival, Arts and Crafts, and eclectic interiors while adding the warmth and authenticity only a genuine antique can provide. Circa 1890s Measures 34H x 21W x 22D; seat 18H This piece is available at Inessa Stewart’s Antiques, Dallas, Texas.
