Chinese Lacquered Roundback Chair, C. 1850

Chairish

$1,280

One of the most iconic designs of Chinese furniture is the roundback chair, also known as the horseshoe-back chair or Grand Tutor chair. Used as a seat of honor, this ceremonial armchair is both comfortable and beautiful, defined by its curved back rail and generous proportions. Crafted with mortise-and-tenon joinery, without the use of nails or screws, this roundback chair from the mid-19th century is a feat of carpentry - from the hand-carved panels decorating the back splat to the seamless curve of the three-piece back railing. The classic chair features a woven rattan seat, a scrolled apron with low relief details, and a back splat of abstract cutouts and a fretwork carving of an immortal playing with a mythical fu lion. A layer of dark, red-brown lacquer accentuates the silhouette, beautifully faded from years of use for a timeworn patina. Additional dimension: seat height 20 1/4"
