Ilmari Tapiovaara was a Finnish interior architect and designer. He was also a visiting professor at the famous Illinois Institute of Technology. In his early creative period, while still studying in Helsinki, he worked in Alvar Aalto's studio in London. After his studies, he was LeCorbusier's assistant in Paris. In the early 1950s, Tapiovaara opened his own studio in Helsinki with his wife Annikki. Between 1951 and 1960, Ilmari Tapiovaara received six gold medals from the Milan Triennale for his designs - more than any other designer. In 1971 he received the Finnish State Prize for Design. Tapiovaara designed the Crinolette armchair in 1962 based on his famous Mademoiselle chair. Ilmari Tapiovaara died in Helsinki in 1999. The chair is in very good condition with slight signs of wear. The chair comes from the estate of the literary critic Fritz J.Raddatz.
