Early 19th c Swedish Kubbstol chair, in alpine pine. Carved from a tree trunk, these primitive chairs were crafted at the turn of the century in and around Sweden. Carved chain detail, and carved hearts are featured on the curved back of the chair. A special curved wood bands circling the top and base and of the seat, crossing gracefully at the back in a ribbon link fashion. Metal pins can be seen on the seat, a mark of the age of the piece. Truly a work of craft, these chairs were found in rural homes throughout Sweden. While some examples are more rustic, this particular chair exhibits unique intricately carved details. The chair is sturdy, free of cracks and splits, and the pine was recently professionally polished.
