Elegant Empire Revival armchair featuring a carved lyre splat accented with brass-tone strings, graceful scrolled arms, and a striped upholstered seat in warm earth tones. The rich mahogany finish and classical silhouette make this an excellent desk chair, library chair, or dining host chair. The lyre motif became extremely popular during the French Empire period under Napoleon (1804–1815). Inspired by ancient Greek and Roman designs, furniture makers incorporated lyres, columns, and classical motifs into seating and case pieces. American Empire furniture of the early 19th century adopted these elements, and numerous revival examples were produced during the mid-to-late 20th century.
