A fine find! These barrel armchairs model No. 729/2F, designed by Joseph Hoffmann, circa 1906. The simplicity of this chair design: is made up of a u-shaped horizontal rail that forms both the armrest and the crest rail. Supported by evenly spaced rods rather than four legs joined into a u-shaped base. Just above the middle of the legs, an appropriately formed suspended seat frame is stabilized with two balls on the underside of the seat. There are no manufacturer’s marks. Important architectural projects included the Purkersdorf Sanatorium, the Stoclet Palace and the Cabaret Fledermaus. Hoffmann was a key figure in the Vienna Secession movement and together with Koloman Moser founded the highly important workshop of modernist craftsmen known as the Wiener Werkstatte.
