Pair Of 18th Century Period French Louis Xvi Walnut Armchairs

Chairish

$6,375

A distinguished pair of period French 18th century Louis XVI period armchairs, finely crafted with carved walnut frames and exhibiting the refined symmetry and classical restraint emblematic of the period. Each chair features a tall, rectangular upholstered back crowned by an elegant carved crest with scrolling foliate detail, flanked by fluted uprights that continue through the seat rail. The shaped arms are supported by crisply carved baluster-form arm supports and terminate in padded armrests. The seats are generously proportioned and raised on turned and fluted tapering legs, joined by carved stretchers, all retaining a rich, warm patina developed over centuries of use. Both chairs are upholstered in a striped silk or silk-blend textile with delicate floral motifs, in soft tones of rose, cream, and muted gold—an upholstery choice that complements the architectural quality of the carving while remaining sympathetic to the period aesthetic. These armchairs exemplify the elegant linearity and classical influence of the Louis XVI period, making them ideal as a refined salon pair, library chairs, or accent seating in a formal interior. Provenance Purchased Manheim galleries New Orleans, Louisiana, December 2001.
