My Sâlao chair is notable for its easy comfort and its distinctive curved seating surfaces, which were inspired by ergonomics – that's always where I start! The Sâlao chair's dimensions and angles are all calculated to enhance the chair's laid-back, relaxed comfort. The lowest point of the front edge of the chair's seat is 17½” above the floor. Those curved painted parts are celebrated by being installed atop steel standoffs so that they suggest that they're being presented by a waiter's fingers holding up a delivery tray. It's made out of Cedrela odorata (Spanish cedar), which is a species that thrives in Central America and northern South America. It grows so prolifically that it's often used in reforestation projects. These days it's far more responsible than teak – plantation grown teak is usually not very high quality and wild grown is now an over-harvested threatened species. I have signed the chair by hand on the inside of the frame's rear stretcher.
