Set Of Danish Lacquer & Gilt Baroque Armchairs From Kastellet Copenhagen, 19th Century

Chairish

$1,642

An important pair of beech-framed Baroque armchairs, made in the 19th century and modelled directly after 1725 originals. They bear their original red lacquer finish with gilt foliage detailing, and a very heavy blue striped upholstery. They were made for the Kommandantboligen (Commander's House) at Kastellet in Copenhagen, Denmark - a beautiful 18th Century mansion situated in a well-preserved 17th Century star-shaped fortress. The Kommandantboligen, designed by German-Danish architect Elias David Häusser in 1725, was, until 2008, the official residence of Denmark's Chief of Defence. These were removed from the house in 2017 during a program of renovation and modernisation. See photographs for provenance, which show the rear yard of Kommandantboligen and the Kastellet Lutheran church and windmill in the background.
