A spectacular circa 1820 French Provincial cherry armoire or wardrobe with rich hues, fine wood graining, wonderful patina and elaborate steel hardware. The armoire is capped with a deeply-carved, stepped-out cornice and a classically carved shell above a pair of full-length paneled doors, which shapely follows the cornice’s graceful upward sweep. The doors are carved with marquetry centers and outfitted with heavy steel hinges, an original key and decorative keyhole escutcheons. The cabinet sits on a charmingly carved serpentine apron that melds seamlessly into its short scrolled legs. This is a large, imposing armoire that can be partially disassembled for ease of transport. Unlike so many others, this armoire’s back panel has not been mutilated by arbitrarily hacked holes.
