A Louis Xvi Mahogany Rafraichissoir In The Manner Of Joseph Gengenbach Canabas

Chairish

$5,783

A superb Transition-style mahogany wine cooler reminiscent of Joseph Gegenbach Canabas (France 1715-1797); the curved tabletop fitted with two silver-plated metal coolers behind a recessed serving area; the deep apron fitted with a single drawer over two concave shelves; the whole raised on long and graceful cabriole supports ending in a scrolled foot terminating in bronze toupie feet and casters. This model is typical of that of Gegenbach Canabas who became a master craftsman in 1766. Its distinctive feature is the curved rear section which houses the two bottle holders. A similar model can be found in the acclaimed book "18th-Century French Furniture" by Pierre Kjellberg, p. 164. The Louvre Museum holds a similar rafraichissoir in its collection, as does the Nissim de Camondo Museum (illustrated in "Musée Nissim de Camondo," 1973, no. 271, p. 65).
