American Victorian Faux Bamboo and Bird's Eye Maple vanity, circa 1890, by R. J. Horner & Co, New York. R. J. Horner was one of America's most celebrated furniture manufacturers of the time and his workshops produced many designs inspired by Japanese, Chinese, and Anglo-Japanese decorative traditions. Vanity features a rectangular swivel mirror with meticulously carved faux bamboo turnings and crowned with a row or finial ornaments. Flanking the mirror are charming spindle galleries and elevated display shelves. Below, the spacious dressing surface rests above a three-drawer case comprising a long central drawer flanked by two smaller drawers. The drawers retain their original T-form pulls and are framed by bamboo moldings that continue throughout the piece. The case is supported by out swept faux bamboo legs joined by a spindle stretcher, lending both stability and visual lightness. The warm honey-toned bird's eye maple displays remarkable figuring throughout. The combination of exotic styling, fine materials, and functional design make this vanity a particularly desirable example of late Victorian furniture.
