I am going to refer to the curled wooden decorations on each side of each leg as epaulets. They are decorative and serve no supportive function. I feel that they are quite attractive and set this bench/stool from others. The base is a satin black finish. The upholstery is black and white striped Italian velvet. It would look wonderful by a black lacquered piano
