An Italian show piece- this carved wood and upholstered sofa bench, with its original painted finish, from the turn of the 18th and 19th century. This antique sofa from Italy has a barrel style backrest which gently curves and embraces the sides with a comforting wrap and continues to make up the arm rests. The elegantly simple wooden top rail, is linear and softly rounds down onto shoulders embellished with carved flowers along the otherwise clean top rain, and terminating into curled knuckles at the end of the arm rest. Carved leaves make up the front arm posts and raise the backrest along the rear corners and middle. The seat rail is hand-carved along the front and sides with various petite trimmings. The sofa is raised nicely upon six flute-carved cylindrical legs that gently taper to their feet. The yellow and gold fabric is likely Gray Watkins and is in usable condition. The finish is original and has a lovely old patina which reflects its centuries old history. This piece is stable enough to sit on, though we do not recommend it for every day use (maybe a great place to catch a purse or jacket!); we consider this to be more of a piece of art! This 18th century Italian sofa bench, approximately 6.25 feet in length, would be a stand out show piece for a hallway or entry foyer!
