Antique Georgian Oak And Elm Vernacular Bench, 1770

Chairish

$3,892

Charming 18th-Century Georgian Oak and Elm Country Settle, circa 1770 A particularly attractive 18th-century English country settle in oak and elm, dating from around 1770. This charming piece features a high back with an unusual arrangement of five raised and fielded panels set between moulded rails and mullions, giving it real presence and character. The slightly sloped backrest, straight open arms and shaped vertical supports create a welcoming, comfortable seat. The settle retains its original single-panel elm seat, made from a magnificent wide elm board with rounded edges, set over a straight frieze and standing on simple square block feet. The pegged construction and chamfered supports highlight its honest, traditional craftsmanship. with its superb rustic character, exceptional colour and rich patina, this settle has been carefully cleaned and waxed in our workshops and is offered in excellent condition. The use of elm for the wide, single plank seat not only adds visual interest but also reflects period practice, as elm’s interlocking grain was valued for its strength and resistance to splitting. Originally designed to be placed beside large open fireplaces in country houses and inns, this is a wonderfully characterful piece that brings warmth, history and understated Georgian charm to any interior. It works equally well in a hallway, kitchen, boot room or beside a modern hearth, adding instant atmosphere and authenticity.
