Vintage Japanese Minimalist Display Bench, 1960s

Chairish

$468

This vintage Japanese display bench dates from the Shōwa period and has a particularly sober, functional presence. The top is made from long parallel wooden slats with open spacing, supported by sturdy straight legs and simple crossbars. The construction is clear and honestly visible, giving the piece a strong minimalist character. The wood has a warm mid-brown tone with visible grain, subtle colour variations and darker signs of use at the ends of the slats. This patina gives the bench character without disturbing its clean form. The open structure makes the piece feel light, while the solid construction keeps it highly practical. Today, this is a beautiful display piece for a contemporary interior. Ideal for ceramics, ikebana, books, a plant or a carefully chosen sculptural object. Used as a low bench in an entrance hall, beneath a window or against a sober wall, it brings warmth, rhythm and Japanese simplicity into the space. The bench is sturdy and functional, with signs of use and patina consistent with age and use.
