First edition of Harold Rosenberg’s study of Armenian-American artist Arshile Gorky, whose lyrical abstract oeuvre prefigured Abstract Expressionism. Published in 1962 by Horizon Press. 8vo (6” x 8.5”), hardcover in pictorial dust jacket, 144 pages, b/w and color illustrations throughout, some full-page. From the personal library of fellow art critic and historian Dore Ashton, with her signature in pencil on the FFE, and additional markings throughout. Both Ashton and Rosenberg championed the New York School artists.
