He wanted to use as little material as possible for the upright members, while still providing strength, and realized this meant orienting the vertical pieces at 90 degrees to each other. And minimizing material meant that the vertical pieces would be narrower at the top and bottom and fatter in the middle. It turns out that the visual result of these engineering constraints is pleasing to the eye. That first bookcase needed to be so short that there was no room for legs. These got added in later iterations.
