Modernist Ceiling Or Wall Lights, 1930s, Set Of 2

Chairish

$660

This original pair of ceiling or wall lamps dates from the 1930s and represents a rare surviving example of early modernist lighting design from the interwar period. Designed to be mounted either on the ceiling or on the wall, the lights combine functional versatility with a strong architectural presence. At the centre of each lamp sits a striking milk glass sphere, softly diffusing the light and creating a calm, atmospheric glow. The glass globe is held in place by a circular steel body with a contrasting wooden rim, a subtle yet sophisticated combination of cold industrial and warm natural material that adds depth and balance to the overall composition. The glass shade is secured by three exposed screws set into the steel head. This small but intentional detail is more than simply practical; it expresses the honesty of construction and clarity of function that defined modernist and functionalist design of the 1930s. The screws also allow the globe to be easily removed, making bulb changes simple while preserving the original hardware and design integrity. The wooden base mounts directly to the wall or ceiling, giving the lights great versatility in placement. They work beautifully in hallways, bedrooms, bathrooms, or as atmospheric lighting in living or dining spaces. Whether installed on the wall or ceiling, they function not only as lighting but also as small architectural objects that bring a soft modernist character to an interior. This piece is designed in the style of the selected designer and/or manufacturer, Up to 250V (Europe/UK Standard). The wiring of this item may be original and might need replacement, if not specified otherwise.
