Sigma Ceiling Or Wall Lights By Sergio Mazza For Artemide, 1960s, Set Of 5

Chairish

$6,212

An exceptional and increasingly rare set of five "Sigma" ceiling or wall lights designed by Sergio Mazza for Artemide in the 1960s, one of the most refined and recognizable lighting designs of Italian Modernism. Conceived with Sergio Mazza's unmistakable architectural approach, the Sigma reduces lighting to its essential forms while achieving remarkable visual richness through the interaction of glass, light, and proportion. More than sixty years after its introduction, it remains one of Artemide's most timeless creations. Each fixture is centered around an extraordinary molded pressed-glass diffuser, distinguished by an intricate radial texture that transforms the emitted light into a soft, atmospheric glow. Once illuminated, the glass reveals a luminous sunburst pattern that subtly changes with the observer's position, giving each fixture an almost kinetic visual quality. The diffusers are elegantly framed by nickel-plated brass rings, whose restrained finish enhances the purity of the circular composition. Four exposed cylindrical retaining pins punctuate each perimeter with understated precision, expressing the honesty of the construction while becoming an integral part of the design itself. Originally conceived for both ceiling and wall installation, the Sigma offers exceptional versatility. As a complete set of five, these fixtures allow for sophisticated architectural compositions that are rarely encountered today. They can be installed in a linear sequence to emphasize the perspective of a corridor, arranged asymmetrically across a large wall, or distributed throughout an interior to create a coherent visual identity. Equally suited to private residences, galleries, boutiques, hospitality projects, or public interiors, they provide a sculptural presence even before being illuminated. When switched off, the five fixtures appear as a minimalist composition of refined circular forms. Once illuminated, they animate the architecture with warm reflected light and the extraordinary optical depth of their molded glass, demonstrating Sergio Mazza's masterful balance between technical innovation and timeless elegance. All five examples are preserved in excellent vintage condition. The pressed-glass diffusers remain beautifully preserved, while the nickel-plated brass frames display a delicate natural patina consistent with age, enhancing both their authenticity and collectible appeal. Finding a single Sigma is becoming increasingly difficult; assembling a matching set of five is exceptionally rare, making this an outstanding opportunity for collectors, architects, and interior designers seeking one of Artemide's most iconic early lighting systems. The fixtures are preserved in excellent vintage condition with beautiful age-related patina to the nickel-plated brass and only minor signs of use consistent with their age.
