Victorian Burl Walnut & Marquetry Inlaid Flip-Top Game Table, Circa 1870

Chairish

$1,000

A beautifully crafted Victorian burl walnut game table featuring elegant marquetry inlay and a richly figured book-matched burl walnut top. Dating to approximately 1870, this table embodies the refined craftsmanship of the Victorian parlor era, when entertaining guests with cards and games was an essential social ritual. The top displays a dramatic mirror-matched burl walnut veneer, accented by delicate lightwood foliate marquetry that adds a refined decorative flourish. The shaped top opens and swivels to reveal a green baize playing surface, designed for cards or gaming while protecting the polished wood. When closed, the table functions as an elegant occasional or center table, making it equally suited for a living room, library, or entry. The table is raised on a turned pedestal base with carved bulb details, supported by four gracefully scrolling cabriole legs with carved ornament and original brass casters. The sculptural base gives the piece a strong architectural presence while maintaining the lightness expected of Victorian parlor furniture. Particularly appealing is the warm patina of the walnut and the striking burl figure, which makes the piece extremely photogenic and designer-friendly—exactly the type of accent table that interior designers seek for traditional, transitional, or eclectic interiors. A charming and functional example of 19th century Victorian gaming furniture.
