20th Century Italian Sterling Silver Baroque Jatte Centrepiece

1st Dibs

$4,558

This type of centerpiece was very much in vogue in the prestigious and aristocratic houses of the 1700s.It was used to contain fruit or be decorated with floral compositions and positioned in the center or, if the owner owned more than one, on the sides of elegant tables to amaze diners and make official lunches or dinners more pleasant. The jatte was made in Milan by the Marchetti silversmith at the end of the 20th century. The base of the centerpiece is very large embossed and chiseled with the typical baroque "ribs". On the edge of the base a border in baroque fusion was welded with the typical scroll design. Inside, a knurling was done, again by hand, and then burnished to make a contrast with the shiny parts of the object. The same type of processing was done on the body of the object. The handles, made in casting, are smooth and end with hand chiseled parts with acanthus leaf design. The inside of the jatte has been semi-gloss gilded, with 24Kt pure gold.Italian silverware, already with a centuries-old tradition, had a great development in the twentieth century and produced pieces of the highest quality that the whole world envies. Italian craftsmanship had a kind of new Renaissance after the war. A great many high-quality silverware was born where exceptional pieces were produced that now decorate the most prestigious houses.
