Daisy Table in Carved Walnut with Glass Top Italy, circa 1960 An exceptional Italian centerpiece table with a striking sculptural presence. Crafted entirely from solid walnut, this table combines masterful carving with organic forms and is considered one of the defining designs of Italian design from the second half of the 20th century. Rising from a solid, fluted, round base, an elegantly curved central column culminates in a striking wreath of 34 symmetrically carved leaves. These three-dimensional leaves support the generously sized round glass top, lending the piece an extraordinary lightness. The table's sculptural effect is particularly evident when viewed from above: The wreath of leaves resembles an open daisy, its petals harmoniously arranged around the center. At the same time, associations with stylized acanthus leaves, palm fronds, or an open lotus blossom can be discerned—a free interpretation of botanical forms typical of Italian design in the 1960s and 70s. Symbolism of the Daisy For centuries, the daisy has been a symbol of purity, naturalness, hope, and joie de vivre. Its perfectly symmetrical flower shape represents harmony, balance, and the beauty of natural proportions. The circular arrangement of the carved petals echoes this symbolism and lends the table a calm, almost meditative aura. Simultaneously, the design combines classical ornamentation with modern sculptural elegance. The Number 34 – Harmony and Growth Equally remarkable is the number of carved leaves: 34. This number belongs to the famous Fibonacci sequence, in which each number is the sum of the two preceding ones: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34… The Fibonacci sequence is found everywhere in nature – in flower clusters, leaf arrangements, shells, or galaxies – and has been considered for centuries to be an expression of harmonious growth processes. The number 34 is often associated with growth, harmony, and perfection. Whether consciously chosen or not, the regular arrangement of the 34 leaves underscores the exceptionally balanced proportions of this table.
