Mid 20th-Century Monteith-Style Earthenware Crenellated Rim Footed Compote

Chairish

$228

Excellent Pre-Owned Condition. Beautifully decorated with a floral and foliate motif, complemented by a whimsical crenellated rim, this earthenware monteith-style footed compote will serve perfectly as a decorative accent on a mantelpiece, tabletop or étagère. A monteith was a type of vessel used to cool wine glasses. The crenellated or scalloped rim allowed wineglasses to suspend in chilled water. The earliest surviving monteiths date from 1684. The form later became popular in the late 17th century and examples in silver, base metals, glass, pottery and porcelain continued to be produced throughout the 18th century. This beauty measures 9¾” x 8½” x 6” W/D/H; interior 9” x 8” x 4” W/D/H; weight 2 lbs. 2 oz. Handcrafted in Italy in a Berettino-style glaze which is tinted blue. The shade and density of blue varies according to the quantity of cobalt used which in the case of this compote, it’s a pale dusty blue. Colors of violet, saffron, forest green and pink rose are muted, as a whole, and are quite lovely! In excellent condition with minimal age-appropriate wear. Underglaze makers mark on the underside. Photos were taken in the round to show the varying shades and nuances of the vessel. In today’s modern spaces this beauty will be a fabulous accent centerpiece accent full of orbs or spheres as part of a tablescape when entertaining or a stylish pedestal fruit bowl on any kitchen island. Thanks for looking!
