1920s–1930s L. Hitchcock Stenciled Side Chair With Rush Seat

Chairish

$388

An authentic early 20th-century Hitchcock side chair produced by L. Hitchcock of Hitchcocksville (Riverton), Connecticut. This classic example features the company’s signature hand-applied harvest still-life stencil, depicting a central urn with fruit and foliage, set against a warm, dark-stained frame. The chair is constructed with turned legs accented by gilt banding, a traditional rush seat, and sturdy stretchers that reflect Hitchcock’s commitment to durable, functional design. The original stamped mark to the seat rail — “L. Hitchcock, Hitchcocksville, Conn. Warranted” — confirms period production and authentic manufacture. Produced during the Colonial Revival era, Hitchcock chairs were intentionally modeled after early American forms while benefiting from improved early 20th-century craftsmanship.. This chair is well suited for use as a side chair, desk chair, or accent seating in a traditional or eclectic interior. JUNE'S THOUGHTS I love this Hitchcock chair — and I say that as someone who owns one from the same period and uses it daily as my desk chair. These chairs are extraordinarily well made; they never seem to loosen, wobble, or complain, even with regular use. Long before “sustainability” became a buzzword, Hitchcock was producing furniture meant to last for generations. This is the kind of honest craftsmanship that quietly proves the most sustainable pieces are often the ones already made. #00811JWHpkme
