19th Century Chinese Yoke Back Ming Chairs, A Pair

Chairish

$4,800

A pair of Chinese yoke-back Ming chairs (Qing Dynasty), made of hardwood and finely carved throughout. An arched crest rail surmounts a pierced back splat, carved with the traditional Chinese characters Fú, meaning "good fortune", "blessing", or "happiness", and shòu meaning "long life". The crest rail and hand holds are shaped like calligraphic brushstrokes with rounded ends. Traditional seats are square, with carved aprons and stretchers connected to straight legs. Sculpted with dynamic and vigorous lines, the yoke-back is often called the ‘official’s cap chair’ due to it's resemblance to the winged official’s hat, once worn by high ranking administrators in the Ming Dynasty.
