Companion pair of American Windsor fan back side chairs. Late 18th century. These early chairs are characterized by their hand shaped crests above carved spindles and turned supports. Only these early chairs have single plank seats. They're a very heavy width pine carved to conform to the body and shaped at sides in front to give grace and function. The legs below are what we call, in particular, a true Windsor turning, held with turned stretchers, all in the best form of the period. Older refinishing, minor repairs. They are similar but not identical. Left chair height 36 1/2 inches, width 20 1/2 inches, depth 20 inches, seat height 16 1/2 inches. Right chair, height 34 inches, width 9 1/2 inches, depth 21 1/2 inches, seat height 17 inches.
