A fine pair of antique Georgian mahogany side chairs with elegant proportions and beautifully shaped pierced splat backs. The splats are well drawn with flowing lines and a central interlaced design giving the chairs a refined decorative presence without being overworked. Raised on square chamfered legs with supporting stretchers these chairs have a solid and practical construction typical of early 19th century English cabinetmaking. The rich mahogany has developed a warm attractive colour over time which adds to their overall appeal. The drop-in seats are upholstered in a soft golden fabric which works well against the depth of the mahogany and can easily be recovered if a different look is desired. Chairs of this type were used throughout Georgian homes in a variety of settings including hallways, bedrooms, drawing rooms and around occasional tables making them highly versatile pieces as well as decorative.
