History: The bustle was an wealthy society fashion accessory throughout the nineteenth century replacing the hoop skirt. A desired attraction and fashion statement that exaggerated the curvature of the buttocks. The Bustle Chair or Bustle Bench was created to accommodate this fashion. The open back would allow a lady to sit unhindered by the bustle and multiple fabric layers. It was preferable to painters as it flattered a woman and the portrait over a straight back chair.
