Late 19th Century Black Forest Hand Carved North Wind Chair

Chairish

$585

A piece that will draw everyone's attention- an antique "North Wind chair" or "green man chair" with bobbin spindles. We believe this is made of oak as they often were. It is as solid and sturdy as they come. These chairs were often used in parlors as dramatic and decorative additions. This style was popular during the late Victorian era (1880-1900) into the early 20th century. The fantastically detailed carved wood north wind face, from folklore, was supposed to blow evil spirits away or signify the change in seasons. Many U.S. companies made them. A Remnant of what we believe to be the original label is still affixed to the underside of the chair. Could have been made in Germany, or made in the U.S. by Stomps-Burkhardt furniture which was in business from 1859 until about 1928. Perfect for a traditional, gothic, or castlecore abode.
