The Woman with the Fan, while not a surrealist work, is representative of the dominant dialogue at the beginning of the Twentieth Century between the traditional western figurative language and that of the Black sculptural tradition. The result was a world of original new expressive possibilities, to which also the circle of Breton and Apollinaire were drawn. In this painting, which was created just after Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, Picasso further explores the deconstruction of the image, in which the observation of objects from multiple simultaneous points of view denies the possibility of an ordered sequence of planes of perspective. In Musa this process reaches a new extreme, the process of fusion of the forms of the woman with those of the chair in which she sits reaches completion, becoming a unique piece of furniture.
