This handsome pair of dark elm wood chairs, were produced in Shanxi province during the mid 19th century in a style referred to as 'Southern Official' chairs. They are still in their original dark finish, with signs of wear over the years, on the seats, legs and footrests. The backrests are in subtly curved 'S' shapes, each featuring a circular motif in relief carving with a 'fù' character meaning 'rich' or 'wealthy' - a symbol believed to bring prosperity to the owner of the chairs. Scrolling dragons in relief carving can be seen at the corner of the headrail and side posts, which suggest they were made for someone of high social status. Narrow, rounded curved arms are in keeping with this traditional style, they join onto the front supporting posts rather than protruding out to the front. In a distinctive, elegant style, the chairs are ideal for occassional seating, adding an element of interest and character to a reception room, living area or bedroom .
