This handsome pair of chairs are from Shanxi province in central China, made from elm wood. They have unusual features with a straight, rounded top rail and decorative carved apron and turned central posts supporting the arms - a detail rarely seen in Chinese furniture, that work beautifully in contrast with the plain, curved back rest. The original dark lacquer finish has worn over the years, on the seat and other sections, to the paler wood underneath adding to the sense of history and unique charm. Ornate relief carvings on the panel below the seat are in a geometrical, scrolling pattern. Each chair features a footrest and supporting braces between the legs that step higher from front to back in the 'bubugao' style that was indicative of high status, above are open carvings around the lower apron and spandrels. These are a most unusual pair of 'Southern Official' chairs that would make a real focal point in a hallway, reception area or living room.
