A rare French Louis XV duchesse en bateau chaise longue, believed to date to the late 18th century. This elegant reclining form features a tall, enveloping back at one end, a lower curved end at the opposite side, and a long continuous seat supported by a gracefully shaped walnut frame. The exposed frame is defined by serpentine rails, molded edges, slender cabriole legs, and restrained scroll feet. Its sculptural silhouette and asymmetrical profile are characteristic of French Louis XV seating, while the comparatively restrained carving suggests provincial rather than Parisian manufacture. The chaise retains traditional upholstery materials, including coarse linen or burlap backing, hand-applied upholstery tacks, and visible horsehair stuffing in areas where the outer covering has been lost. The numerous historic tack holes and layered upholstery materials indicate that the piece has been reupholstered several times during its long life. Currently presented in unfinished, distressed upholstery and intended for professional restoration. Once reupholstered, this substantial antique chaise would make an exceptional statement piece.
