Circa 1900 French Beaux Arts Fire Gilt Bronze And Hand Cut Crystal Chandelier

Chairish

$10,000

Large circa 1900 French Beaux-Arts fire-gilt bronze and hand-cut crystal chandelier, finely cast in the grand Neoclassical taste. The Beaux-Arts style, dominant during the Gilded Age and rooted in Neoclassical and Greek Revival design, is characterized by symmetry, architectural order, and lavish ornamentation, all of which are strongly expressed in this impressive French chandelier. This substantial early 20th-century example features a large hand-cut, etched crystal center bowl that provides soft, diffused illumination, framed by intricate fire-gilt bronze mounts and refined Neoclassical appliqués. The richly detailed fire gilding and crisp hand-cut crystal distinguish it clearly from later, mass-produced fixtures. The superb quality of the casting, original-style fire gilding, and hand-cut crystal etching reflects the height of French Beaux-Arts craftsmanship and fully embodies the ideal of “beaux arts,” or “beautiful arts.” Chandeliers of this scale and period, combining fire-gilt bronze with hand-cut, etched crystal, are increasingly difficult to find, making this an outstanding focal point for a grand entry, formal dining room, or important interior. Dimensions without canopy and chain: H=54 in. W=38 in. 78 lbs.
