This beautiful antique table from Shanxi province could be used as a low coffee table in front of a sofa or as a TV stand. It has a frame and panel design with its original finish and drawer handles. It was traditionally used as a storage chest for valuables, with the drawers able to be locked. Additionally, the drawers can be removed to access the concealed space beneath the fixed bottom panels. Walnut wood is utilised to construct the coffer, a less commonly used material than elm but was readily available in Shanxi. This wood type is highly esteemed for furniture making, often favored over elm and boasting a distinctive golden hue. A dark lacquer covers the wood of this table, the top surface of which displays a charmingly worn patina. Its four drawers and panels lie beneath rounded frames, a characteristic often seen in Shanxi furniture. An authentic design with considerable character, it would make a stylish addition to any home.
