AL-03 Coffee Table by Orlando PippigDimensions: W 102 x D 51 x H 36 cm (Dimensions may vary slightly)Materials: Aluminum, Smoked GlassThe forms presented in AL-03 were heavily influenced by the glass artworks Larry Bell created in the 60’s, as part of the light and space art movement that emerged from Southern California. I had the pleasure of viewing these works in person at Dia: Beacon and was completely entranced by their translucent illusions. Continuing the same geometric direction as the preceding AL designs, 2 square planes of aluminum make both L’s that the smoked glass top rests on. Offsetting the L’s visually aligns the two opposing squares, creating negative space to imply the illusion of a singular rectangle. Following Bell’s works, negative space is an equally important element in this design as the positive is. AboutOrlando Pippig is a self taught furniture / object designer currently living and working in New York City. For the last 8 years, he’s been designing and fabricating high end furniture, centered around solid wood and metal. In 2020 he opened his own studio. His personal designs are rooted in visual simplicity that’s driven by form, with a strong focus on highlighting specific materials. Drawing inspiration from many sources; nature, sculpture, industrial environments, architecture, he finds ways to mesh these separate sources into singular expressions. His work is influenced by systematic iteration, working individual concepts into multiple designs to create a linear progression. The design process favors an engineering approach, the goal of fully understanding connection methods and how to best implement. These thinking patterns result in furniture that holds superior strength and a genuine form.
