The tabletop has a sinuous, irregular shape reminiscent of a bean. This type of design was very popular in Midcentury Modern and reflected a desire to move away from the rigid, boxy forms of previous periods. The combination of walnut for the tapered legs and the faux wood finish of the top, along with the gold-leaf-decorated edge, is typical of this period. Natural, luxurious materials were often used in innovative ways.
