Maitland-Smith’s Bronze “Whippets” On A Brass Base Coffee Table, With Thick Round Glass, 1980, Art Deco, Contemporary

Chairish

$2,250

Such a sophisticated and stylish coffee table! Leave it to Maitland Smith to design a functional, unique table that looks more like a piece of sculptural art! The highly detailed, bronze whippets are bolted onto their designated positions, atop a shiny brass base. The dogs have numbers stamped on the whippet’s right haunch (some people say that the mark is underneath their tails—not so, with these), that coordinate with their positions on the base (#87, #88, and #89). The whippets and the base weigh 25.2 lbs. The bronze dogs are immaculate—with a deep, rich patina—very lifelike! The shiny brass on the base has minimal scratches or discolorations—many of these bases have NOT aged well—“zoom” in on the photos. This is one of the “cleanest” whippet tables that I have seen in a long time. The glass top is a half inch thick and heavy—very well made! While the table could easily support a larger glass top, I do not know if “I” could, as the glass weighs 30 lbs! ;) I could find no scratches, cracks, discolorations or chips, and the top’s edges are beautifully rounded for safety and style—it would be very difficult to break this glass! This is a classic vintage piece that would look spectacular in many decors, be it Contemporary, Art Deco, or Hollywood Regency, just to name a few. It has appeal for the young and old—toddlers get down on their hands and knees to pet the little “puppies”!
