Each coffee table is part of ROU Materiaal’s Tessella Collection and can be composed in a mosaic fashion together with other sculpture tables of different sizes. Stratifications of materials given and removed several times continue to be ROU Materiaal’s field of research. The result is a surface mimicking the feeling of stone, thus creating unexpected material depths. The sculptural tables and wooden sculptures originate from the search for wood from centuries-old Italian trees that were felled due to disease or standing death. The wood is treated in a way that combines techniques that highlight the veins or natural imperfections with others that give a more contemporary texture, such as fire, sands, gilding, and resins.ROU Materiaal works in close collaboration with highly skilled local artisans who bring decades—if not generations—of tradition and expertise. The carpenter, whose family workshop has been active for generations, also specializes in the restoration of antique furniture and historic architectural woodwork. The blacksmith is both artisan and artist, crafting the bases and pedestals of ROU Materiaal’s works by hand in his countryside workshop near Ravenna, using time-honored traditional techniques that he also applies to his own artistic creations.Since the foundation of ROU Materiaal, Marzia and Monica have developed a unique surface treatment technique that is constantly evolving. Rooted in both traditional restoration practices and the art of Chinese lacquer, this method is reinterpreted with a contemporary sensibility. Layers of acrylics and resins are applied and then partially removed after drying, sometimes combined with other materials such as sand, cement, mortar, stucco, mosaic tesserae, gold leaf, lapis lazuli powder, straw, and more. Fire is also used as a material and gesture within the process. The method of layering and subtracting follows an intuitive rhythm, ending when Marzia and Monica feel that a specific version, texture, or balance has been achieved. Much of the final outcome depends on their emotional state, instincts, and the element of surprise introduced by chemical reactions. These reactions are often deliberately provoked through "wrong" or unexpected combinations, in order to obtain unique, imperfect, and unrepeatable effects.Though the Tessella Collection is conceived as an open edition, each piece is rendered one-of-a-kind due to the chromatic nuances and the three-dimensional depth achieved through this distinctive, expressive process.Open edition.Standard production time is approximately 8–9 weeks once current stock is sold out.One piece available for immediate delivery.
