The carving to the spandrels represent clouds and atmosphere suggesting a high and heavenly status. The everted flanges pointing up in an open welcoming position. Chinese traditional art and customs are infused with symbols and habits that pertain to flowers, nature and the Moon. The lower struts between the legs reveal carvings of Peony flowers. The chrysanthemum (Peony) symbol of autumn, flower of the ninth moon, the King of flowers, is a symbol of royalty and virtue. Looking closely you can notice a crescent moon facing upward beneath the flowers, with also two objects flying up to the moon lower right and left symbolizing the promise of abundance, harmony, and good fortune.
