This elegant 19th century altar table is light and beautifully proportioned. It was masterfully designed with stretchers that appear to wrap around its round legs even though the joints are hidden within. Collectors of Chinese furniture consider tables designed in this way as 19th century riffs on earlier mundane furniture constructed of bamboo. The medallions on the aprons are unusual cloud forms and the top is a solid plank of northern elm. The original black lacquer finish has aged gracefully over time.
