With monumental proportions and an unconventional design, this grand Chinese altar table from the mid-18th century is a truly special find. The long table has an expansive plank-top surface shaped from a single beam of nanmu hardwood, accented with visible double joints and an inlaid patched repair in the shape of a ripe peach. Ribbed carvings decorate the sides with reeded texture, designed to resemble early Chinese furniture made of bent bamboo. For added dimension, an openwork apron floats beneath the tabletop and exaggerates these angular lines.
