This impressive antique console table dates to the mid-19th century and displays the balanced proportions of classical Chinese furniture. The table's form is streamlined and simple, minimally accented with hoofed feet and a shallow apron of open fretwork. With rounded curves and a beaded edge, the apron is carved to a geometric meander of tight spirals, a pattern meant to resemble the curling tail feathers of a phoenix. Considered the "emperor of all birds," the mythical phoenix is an omen of peace, benevolence and marital bliss. The tail of a phoenix is said to have feathers in five colors, after the five virtues of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, knowledge and sincerity.
