Rococo Style Carved Giltwood Antique Pier Console Table, 19th Century

Chairish

$3,000

An exquisite console table that borrows design attributes of the Rococo with a "modernized" flair. It is a precise and expertly crafted piece that seeks to reduce visual weight as much as is practical, allowing the brilliant gilding and the simplicity of the well-balanced and nearly symmetrical scrolling pierced frieze to be the forefront of the design. It retains the thick original veined gray marble top. The legs have a distinctive "klismo" form to them, each with a pronounced knee incised with a flattened foliage design and terminate over vigorous cyma-curved acanthus embellished feet locked together with a rocaille stretcher. While clearly influenced by new styles of the time, the craftsman designing this table in the third quarter of the nineteenth-century executed it with purely traditional techniques, including the use of oversized dovetail joinery in the corners. The result is a rather exceptional state of preservation despite the delicacy of design. Typical of the period, all secondary surfaces are finished in a yellow wash. This very striking table is a precious find - sleek, refined and in excellent overall condition. Measurements: 33" H x 41 3/4" W x 21" D
