The design of the armchairs is attributed to both Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser. The model was first used at the first Klimt exhibition at the Secession at the beginning of 1903 and then as part of the furniture in the entrance hall of the Purkersdorf sanatorium. The Purkersdorf sanatorium was built in 1904/05 by the architect Josef Hoffmann. It is an important example of the architecture of the Vienna Secession and groundbreaking for modern architecture in Austria. The cubic shapes, the straight lines and the checkerboard decoration are characteristics of both the construction and the armchair design.
