Chairish

$5,750

A true antique collector's piece. An American carved Federal mahogany sofa, early 19th C, Baltimore, an important furniture making center during this period. Reeded frame, distinctive winged down-swept arms on reeded baluster supports, bowed seat, reeded tapering legs, brass cuffs, casters. Provenance: Charles & Rebekah Clark, Woodbury, Connecticut. Note: The boldly reeded arm supports and legs on this sofa are nearly identical to those found on two sofas attributed to William Camp (fl. 1801-1822) and conserved by the Maryland Historical Society, including a mahogany sofa made for Dr. William Hilleary (Fredrick, 1775-1834) (acc 89.8); a sofa descended in the Baker family of Baltimore (acc 67.50.2). Reference: Weidman and Goldsborough. Classical Maryland 1815-1845, p. 113, fig. 138; Weidman. Furniture in Maryland, 1740-1949, fig. 123. Purchased March 2010 Neal Auction Company, New Orleans, LA. Recently reupholstered in ultra suede, rolled arm cushions are included. The silk pillows and throw are available for additional price. See separate listing.
