Large 19th century french giltwood sofa a large 19th century french giltwood sofa. of large size and with great presence, this sofa has wonderful patinatied giltwood throughout with carved embellishments in the louis xvi neoclassical style. The gently curving line of the back is enhanced with beading, a motif that is also used on the arm supports and on the frieze of the front rail. On the corners are carved paterae with finials and there are turned baluster-type carved sections supporting the arms with floral detailing. The legs are turned and fluted and stand on beaded toupie feet. It stands on eight legs, making it particularly sturdy and well balanced.
